Bye Windows, Hello Ubuntu Linux!

I finally did it, I switched to Linux and I couldn't be happier! I decided to go with the Ubuntu distro as it seems to be the most popular at the moment which is good for support and is regularly updated.

Migrating wasn't all to hard for me as I used Thunderbird for my e-mail and Firefox for my browser while using Windows, all the coding I do can be done in the normal text editor that comes with Ubuntu as it supports syntax highlighting and to top it off Xara X which is what I use to create and edit graphics is free for Linux! Some bad things I have noticed since switching is that Firefox seems to be allot slower and unstable on Linux than it did Windows, but I have switched to Swiftfox which seems has improved the speed a fair bit but I still have trouble running multiple pages with flash objects on them. I also had and am still having some troubles with Compiz but I have managed to fix a few of these by reverting back to default settings, however this can be expected as I believe its still not listed as fully stable but defiantly worth a look at as it gives you many cool animations and more for the desktop.

Want to make the switch but you love your games? Checkout Tux Games theirs tonnes of great titles half of which I didn't even know were available on Linux! I'm currently obsessed with X2: The Threat and recommend this game greatly, try the demo. So why not give it a go yourself, even just boot the live CD and try it out you wont be disappointed.

Don't just go with what is most popular. You should always try to check out as many other distributions as well. It may very well happen that there is another distribution that is more to your taste. Also things are changing and developing very quickly in the Linux world so it can quickly happen that some other distribution becomes better then Ubuntu or maybe even already is. Anyway this is just a tip from another Linux newbie. Welcome to the Linux community!

Well I started using Ubuntu way back it first came out and stuck with it ever since. I found that it the most sopport for my hardware and it was the first Linux distribution to see the full potential of my old computer's video card (VooDoo3 3000). Since then I have used it as my web server, database server, for my senior project, countless computer science projects, and daily computing on my laptop and never was happier with it. I would say you have made a good choice, and welcome.

I have actually tried some other distros and as I manage web servers mostly centos on a daily basis the obvious choice was to try the centos first which seemed to be a great distro at the time but still lacking in some areas. The main reason I chose Ubuntu is because I like how the Ubuntu community helps in the forums and how the faq's are clearly laid out on the Ubuntu site which means any questions I may have or problems the answer is a click away. Its also been designed to be an easy distro to use for the newbie Linux user while also being a great distro for the advanced user at the same time.

I'm running two machines - one is XP (still need it for a few things) and the other is Ubuntu. Working toward the day when I am completely Microsoft free!

I also switched to ubuntu and have gone through three upgrades, each big steps forward. Microsoft has left me behind after windows 2000 which was/is their best OS. There was no future for me in windows anymore. Yes there are difficulties but when I work with windwos it seems limiting and made for children.

Nobody cares. I've been running Gentoo for years and you don't see me getting any fancy medals on cry cry blogs. Although I can cry here and say the last MS product I used on a regular basis was MS-DOS 6.22... Waaaaah.

As far as internet browsers go try using Opera. Just goto Opera.com and dl it. It is exactly like firefox except it is much quicker and has more stability and actually works better on keeping performance high

I have Opera installed, but I've become so used to using FireFox I dont want to change.
I will see what FireFox 3 brings and if its the same old slowness then I'll consider switching to Opera.

I just suck!

I've tryed opera but have also become accustomed to firefox. What i like about firefox is the simplicity compared to other browsers. Although opera seems faster than firefox, I dont think there will ever be a better browser than firefox. Open source is the way to go. I have also switched to ubuntu this week and am impressed. I would like to try out the other distro's tho.
